“They aim to teach you,

they all have been taught.

They aim at your fear,

all they have is fear.”

Garfield Sanderson

His name is Gary, but that does not matter. It doesn’t matter because Gary has accepted his place in line. Gary has taken his number and he now blames who he is told to blame.

A lifetime ago, he stayed awake all night long. He stayed awake creating, learning, and expanding imagination. His mother said sleep, or else you’ll get sick. His mother said you have to sleep or you’ll always be weak. Now, he sleeps, eight hours a night, so as not to get sick and not to be weak.

A lifetime ago, he came home after school to be alone. He stayed alone creating, learning, and expanding imagination. His mother said friends, it is important to have friends. His mother said you have to have friends or you’ll grow old, sad, and all alone.

He went out with friends, almost every night, so as not to grow sad and end up alone. He went out after school to be with “friends.” He drank enough to have confidence; he took drugs to fit in. His mother said religion, religion will save you from yourself. His mother said you have to have religion or you’ll become a worthless addict.

He searched for a religion, reading and learning, so as not to become an addict and save himself. His mother said this religion, all the others are filled with liars and sinners. His mother said you have to follow this religion or you’ll be wrong and go to hell. Now, he follows, every sacred night, so as not to be wrong and not to go to hell.

Gary now creates spreadsheets. Gary learns how to do his job and what he should believe. Gary imagines what he is guaranteed after his life comes to an end.

She stayed in doing homework, almost every night, so as not to grow sad and end up in a trailer. She stayed in after school to do “homework.” She cried away her loneliness; she took drugs to focus.
